I heard AVG is a free virus protector is that true?

I find it hard believe that there is a FREE virus protection program. I heard that it was indeed free but is the virus detection the only free part or is it a totally free virus blocker, scanner firewall and all that? I don't want to download it so it tells me that there are viruses and i should buy their product and so on.
